Combined disc locks and alarms are a great idea, and this Abus Granit Detecto X Plus 8008 is certainly one of the most solid I’ve used, with a 16mm hardened steel bolt and tough build. It weighs 1153g, and is about the size of a fist, but it should fit under most bike seats okay. That mass makes it a substantial bit of security, and unlike some others I’ve used, it’ll only arm itself when it’s on a disc – not when it’s bouncing about while riding.
The Abus Granit Detecto X Plus 8008 key hole is protected by a rotating cover, and while there are of course slots to let the sound out, placing your hand over them doesn’t make the 100dB siren noticeably quieter. They also don’t let the rain do any damage – I left the lock outside for all of February and it still worked absolutely fine.
The lock comes with two keys (one with an LED light), and the CR2 battery is included; the alarm will notify you if the battery is getting low. The ‘3D detection system’ is very effective, calibrating itself a few seconds after fitting, and sounding should the bike be moved at all. There’s no way of picking your bike up off the stand without it going off, so you needn’t worry about riding away with it on.
The Abus Granit Detecto X Plus 8008 alarm is loud, though not deafening – it’s certainly enough to draw attention, or remind you that it’s there. Of course, nothing beats a sturdy chain and ground anchor, but this is a very effective deterrent, as well as an instant and reliable alarm.
